Assistant Professor of Medicine, UCSF, San Francisco General Hospital
Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS studies the role of food insecurity, or access to enough food for an active, healthy life, in the development and management of obesity and chronic disease. More than ten percent of the population of the United States is food insecure. Her prior work has used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to suggest that food insecurity is independently associated with obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. Her work now focuses on understanding mechanisms by which food insecurity may predispose adults to these conditions, including chronic stress, compensatory behavioral strategies, and changes in dietary intake.
She is currently examining food insecurity and its implications for obesity and chronic disease management in a number of settings, including multi-site studies of patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This formative research will lay the groundwork for developing clinical interventions to facilitate obesity and chronic disease management in populations with high rates of food insecurity.
