A Longitudinal Evaluation of Food Insecurity and the Development of Obesity in Young Adults

Food insecurity is a well-recognized risk factor for obesity among women.  However there has been limited longitudinal evaluation of this relationship.  The goal of this study is to establish the extent to which food insecurity is related to the incidence of obesity and cardiovascular risk factors in young adults.  We are using data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, a prospective, observational cohort study funded by NHLBI.

Our specific aims are to:

1.  Determine whether adults who are food insecure in year 20 of CARDIA have less healthy dietary intake than adults who are food secure
2.  Determine whether food insecurity at year 15 is associated with incident obesity and cardiovascular risk factors at year 20.
